SAN DIEGO — In the 16 years that have passed since his van crashed near the US-Mexico border, a severely brain-damaged San Diego patient has been called only “Garage 66.” But the Mexican Consulate in San Diego announced Friday that the man’s identity has finally been confirmed. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Sharp Coronado Hospital officials could not disclose his name, details of his condition or the circumstances of the accident because of privacy laws. But Sharp spokesman Tom Hanscom says caregivers can now address the patient by name and his family now has some peace of mind. The consulate says family members won’t talk to the media and have asked for privacy. The man is on life support, can’t speak and doesn’t react to his environment. nypost.com/2016/02/01/mystery-garage-66-hospital-patient-idd-after-16-year-wait/

I'm currently listening to the podcast about this case " Room 20" , if you get chance its a fascinating listen, this poor Mexican immigrant who was injured in a car crash near the border when he was 19 years old has spent the past 19 years now in a vegative state kept alive by life support , paid for by the California tax payer, personally I would want some one to switch me off , it is no "life"

That's why I have a "Living Will", all legal and such. Ain't nobody gonna hook me up to some machines that won't do anything but take my family's money.

I agree and have done the same. How come this guy is still on life support? is the state legally obliged to keep him alive? here we have the NHS regularly go to court to switch off life support when the family disagree , view being that if there is no hope of recovery the best thing is to let them go.

I agree it only makes sense to make one's wishes known. I also don't want to be kept "alive" that way. But I'll point out a living will/DNR/advance directive won't do any good if they can't identify you as in this case.
