"It depends, because some cars tires turn faster than others." #wlaughtroll# You know, actually if a speedometer gearing is not set properly for the tire size there is some inaccuracy as to what the speedometer reads and actual speed or travel time, but very slight. In the old days if you increased the tire size (diameter) you replaced a speedometer gear in the transmission.......it was accessible where the cable went int the transmission. Of course the problem was stated "doing 80 mph", not the speedometer says 80 mph.

I put new tires on it and I chose some that had much higher sidewalls than the old ones. I asked my wife to drive down the turnpike at exactly 75 mph. I followed her closely, and my speedometer was reading only 72-73 mph because of the greater circumference of the tires. It follows that logically I wasn't racking up as many miles as a result, also. I checked this out, and sure enough, a 70 mile trip turned into a 67 mile trip, according to my odometer, (with the bigger/taller tires). Peace, OHD

A vehicle traveling at any speed is covering a set distance in a measurable amount of time no matter what an odometer or speedometer says. Avg. speed = distance/time Newton, Einstein & my HS physics teacher would be proud Math cat is done for today

That's simply a calibration distortion. Hence the change in gearing in the speedometer cable....to calibrate it. Larger tires can cause even more error than the 2 to 3 MPH.

On the bright side, it keeps your odometer reading down. Although illegal, great for trade ins & resells Yeah baaaaby, run dem 18 inch wheels for a decade & put the 16 inchers back on to trade it in!!
